Enerpac’s ML40 Mini Lift hydraulic gantry with a 40-t lifting capacity is designed to be portable, simple to set up, and easy to use. It is ideal for machinery movers, plant relocation services and medical equipment installers who need to move machines and equipment in compact spaces.

\n\n

When moving machines or parts of machines either within the same building or to another building, space is always limited. The ML40 features a compact size – with its short, collapsed height of 1.97 m and narrow width of 750 mm – so it can get into spaces that other equipment cannot. The gantry can also rotate the load (up-end or down-turn) to move through the building.

\n\n

When performing a new equipment installation or the removal and installation of equipment for maintenance or repair, industrial movers are often faced with minimal headroom and many obstacles. The ML40 makes it easy to offload the equipment from the delivery vehicle and re-position it for use in the facility.

\n\n

Additionally, the gantry makes it easy to assemble the equipment in sections and then move it as a complete unit into final position. When replacing old equipment, disassembly in sections may be the easiest method of removal. The small size of the ML40 makes it easier to mobilise and set up.

\n\n

The ML40 uses an industry standard 610-mm track gauge and can be operated without support track with considerations for load and ground conditions. The gantry has an extended height of 5.5 m and single-phase 115 or 230 VAC power. There are four legs in total, with each weighing 1,350 kg (including oil).

\n\n

To deliver excellent safety, the ML40 features standard synchronised lifting and control and load readout to ensure safe and level lifting. A wireless pendant keeps the operator away from equipment during operation.

\n\n

The ML40 is also versatile. Its high capacity and simple set up mean jobs with challenging or uncertain information can be managed without issues. The gantry is easy to use as well. With its simple set up, even relatively new rigging operators are able to operate the equipment.

\n\n

The ML40 uses the same accessories as the Enerpac SL100 gantry such as track, header beam and side shifts. For ease of deployment, the ML40 offers freewheel operation for transportation and set up, and a roll cage for overhead lifting and/or towing and pushing for installation.

Indian company Steel Carriers Infrastructure recently carried out a heavy lift operation with the help of Tadano all-terrain cranes.

\n\n

“This was a complex and time-critical job, and the only cranes that could take care of it properly were our powerful Tadano all-terrain cranes, of which we have a large number in our fleet and which we were able to coordinate perfectly for the multi-part lift operation,” said Sunil Makad, managing director of Steel Carriers.

\n\n

The job was to lift a 250-t dome with a diameter of 126 m evenly to a height of 16 m in order to set it down on steel supports and cover a coke storage facility. Eight Tadano cranes with various lifting capacities were deployed on this project.

\n\n

The eight cranes comprised the AC 1000-9, AC 700-9, AC 500-1, AC 500-2, AC 350-6, AC 350-1, AC 250-1 and AC 200-1. They are highly manoeuvrable and thus could be brought to the work site in Rajasthan quickly and cost-effectively.

\n\n

Such manoeuvrability was particularly important, as Steel Carriers summoned its cranes from all over India. According to Mr Makad, the cranes came from Assam, Meghalaya, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa.

\n\n

He pointed out that despite these large distances, Steel Carriers managed to get “all the cranes, as well as the 22 trailers for crane accessories and two utility vehicles, to the site within just six days thanks to a meticulous project plan.”

\n\n

The cranes also feature ease of assembly, resulting in fast setup times, which is an advantage in this time-critical project. In fact, the Steel Carriers team was able to put together all the cranes and have them ready to start lifting in a mere two days.

\n\n

“We set up all the cranes with a standard configuration without extensions, and only the AC 350-1 and AC 350-6 with the Superlift option,” shared Mr Makad.

\n\n

Two years of preparation

\n\n

The 250-t steel dome with a diameter of 126 m was found within a 15-m-tall circular concrete wall and had to be lifted inside it. “The biggest challenge was coordinating the lift with absolute precision,” revealed Mr Makad.

\n\n

“That’s why we came up with a sophisticated communication strategy with the help of walkie-talkies between the crane operators, spotters and our lifting specialist in charge.”

\n\n

Perfecting the lift plan took the Steel Carriers team around two years – a length of time that illustrates the magnitude of the challenges involved in the job. After all, the tandem lift with eight cranes with different lifting capacities was required for the working weight of the cranes to be distributed optimally in line with their respective capacities and positions.

\n\n

To carry out the tandem lift, the team first had to determine the exact centre of gravity of the load with complex calculations. As if that weren’t enough, the boom lengths were not the same among all the cranes, making it quite difficult to keep the dome in a perfectly horizontal position during all the stages of the lift.

\n\n

“However, our meticulous planning for the lift meant that we had everything under perfect control at all times,” said Mr Makad, who had the immediate assistance as and when required by the on-site support provided by the manufacturer through Tadano engineer Mr Manikandan.

\n\n

The lift operation itself consisted of several stages. First, the eight Tadano cranes lifted the dome a bit so that assembly technicians on aerial work platforms could install supports at the edge of the dome.

\n\n

After that, the dome was lifted a bit more so that the workers would be able to extend the installed supports with additional support elements. Following each partial lift, a supervision team used wall markings to ensure that the dome was perfectly even. This sequence was then repeated until the dome reached a height of 16 m.

\n\n

The Steel Carriers team worked around the clock for seven days, with the night shifts having at least one soothing advantage – given the job at the work site took place during a season in which daytime temperatures in Rajasthan go up to 45°C.

\n\n

A strong team

\n\n

Eight cranes with two operators and two assistants each, together with the site managers, technicians, mechanics, foreman and lifting specialist, meant that Steel Carriers had a team of about 80 employees on site.

\n\n

“Our team of experts runs like clockwork, and every single one of us knows exactly what they need to do,” explained Mr Makad. “This project was no exception, which is why we were able to complete all the lifting and assembly work despite the tight schedule.

\n\n

“Needless to say, our Tadano cranes definitely played a part in that as well, as they all worked perfectly and proved to be the ideal choice, just like we’d expected.”

\n\n

Mumbai-based Steel Carriers is now in its fourth generation and is one of the most renowned crane service providers in India. Its fleet includes telescopic and crawler cranes with lifting capacities ranging from 50 to 1,200 t.

\n\n

Steel Carriers was the first Indian company to put a new Demag crane into operation with the AC 200-1 about 15 years ago. Apart from crane rentals, the company also offers transport services and storage services for industrial goods and steel products.

The new Enerpac EMV-series E-mover battery powered load skate is a self-propelled skate featuring a central load bearing plate. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the Enerpac MLS-series wheeled load skates.

\n\n

The E-mover on show at bauma will include a hydraulic lifting cylinder in place of a load bearing plate and has a 50-t load capacity split between the E-mover and wheeled load skate. The self-propelled skate and lifting cylinder are operated by a wireless remote control. Battery life for the E-mover is expected to be between 3 and 5 hours dependent on usage.

\n\n

Enerpac will also introduce its new SBL60 telescopic hydraulic gantry, along with the company’s entry-level gantry system for industrial movers, the ML40 Mini Lift Gantry.

\n\n

The SBL600 Super Boom Lift hydraulic gantry is a three-stage telescopic hydraulic cylinder with rectangular boom for increased capacity and first stage lifting capacity of 674 t and 416 t at the third stage.

\n\n

The SBL600 lifting height of 10.6 m is ideal for placing gas turbine generators and power transformers in power plants, for example. It is a good fit between the SBL500 and SBL900 gantries with lifting heights of 8.6 m and 11.3 m respectively.

\n\n

“Ease of transportation is another key benefit of the new gantry. Foldable boom allows for shipping on standard flatbed trucks without special permitting and routing. In addition, with the self-weight less than 9,100 kg, the SBL600 allows for transport of two legs on a single road truck trailer,” said Jeremy Stubbs, commercial director, Enerpac Heavy Lifting Technology.

\n\n

Accurate synchronised heavy lifting is the hallmark of Enerpac heavy lifting systems. This is well demonstrated by SCJ-series Cube Jacks and their larger JS-series Jack-Up.

\n\n

The Enerpac Cube Jack has set the standard for ease-of-use and productivity for compact, portable lifting solutions. It uses a base lifting frame and self-aligning, lightweight steel cribbing blocks, together with automatic incremental locking, to provide high-capacity and stabilised lifting. It is a safer, controlled, more efficient and environment-friendly alternative to climbing jacks with tropical hardwood cribbing.

\n\n

The Enerpac JS-series Jack-Up systems have transformed the way many heavy lift projects are executed. The Jack-Up system is a synchronised lifting and lowering system with self-contained hydraulics in each unit for uncluttered work areas. Loads are lifted in increments as steel boxes (called ‘barrels’) are stacked together to form lifting towers to mechanically hold the load.

\n\n

The JS-250 Jack-Up system uses computer controls for seamless synchronous control, raising and lowering all towers at the same time. Capacities of the JS-series Jack-Up range from the JS-125, 125 t (500-t lift with four towers) to JS-750, 750 t (3,000-t lift with four towers) with lifting heights from 6 m to 20 m respectively.

\n\n

Furthermore, electric trolleys like the Enerpac ETR provide distinct advantages over traditional methods of transport, such as skidding systems. When it comes to speed, the ETR can travel as fast as 50 m/hour when loaded. To help tackle large structures, the ETR has a capacity of 500 kN per trolley. They also offer continuous movement, power via a self-contained electric drive, wireless radio control. When used in combination with the SCJ-series Cube Jack and JS-series Jack-Up, they provide greater flexibility for moving heavy loads.

\n\n

Enerpac strand jacks pack tremendous lifting capacity into a small footprint. They act like a linear winch. A bundle of steel cables or strands are guided through a hydraulic cylinder; above and below the cylinder are anchor systems with wedges that grip the strand bundle. By stroking the cylinder in and out while the grips are engaged in the anchors, a lifting or lowering movement is achieved. The motion of the cylinders is driven by hydraulic power packs. The Enerpac SCC software programme synchronises the motion of the strand jacks and adjusts the motion to the loads per lifting point.

\n\n

An Enerpac EVO multipoint synchronised lifting system is used to simultaneously control up to 12 cylinders creating a highly accurate and synchronised lift. Operated using a PLC (programmable logic controller), hydraulic cylinders connected to an EVO Synchronous Lifting Pump enable each lifting points to be monitored and controlled by a single operator. The EVO pump maintains accurate positional control within 1 mm between lagging and leading cylinders and includes built-in warning and stop alarms for optimum safety.
